Birch Plywood vs. MDF: Which Blank Should Crafters Buy?

We get this question at every craft fair and in our inbox weekly: should I buy birch plywood or MDF blanks? We cut both in our Statesboro shop, so here's the honest answer — it depends on where the finished piece will live.

The 30-second answer

Birch plywood for anything on a door, porch, or outside. MDF for indoor decor where a perfectly smooth face matters most and budget is tight. If you're building a door hanger business, birch is worth the difference every single time.

Durability and moisture

This is the big one. MDF is compressed wood fiber — it drinks water like a sponge, and once the edges swell, no amount of paint saves the piece. Birch plywood is real wood in cross-laminated layers: it handles humidity swings, survives the occasional rain blow-in, and stays flat on a south-facing door in a Georgia summer. We've seen it firsthand for five years.

Paint and finish

MDF's factory face is glass-smooth and takes paint with zero grain show-through — that's its best feature. Birch shows a subtle wood grain that most makers (and their customers) consider a feature, not a flaw: it reads as "real wood" from two feet away. Both need edge sealing for outdoor use, but birch edges seal once; MDF edges are thirsty forever.

Weight and hanging

A 1/4-inch 18-inch birch round weighs noticeably less than the same round in 3/8-inch MDF. For door hangers on wreath hooks and ribbon, lighter wins — less stress on the hanger, less bounce when the door closes.

Laser and CNC work

Both machine cleanly, but birch engraves with beautiful contrast and structural strength at thin profiles. MDF engraves gray and dusty. If a laser is part of your workflow, birch is the clear pick — and our rounds ship with no burn marks, so your engraving is the first mark on the wood.

Cost

MDF blanks run cheaper — that's real, and for paint parties, classroom projects, and indoor seasonal decor it's the right tool (we cut MDF pumpkins for exactly that). But for anything a customer pays $50+ for, the material cost difference is a couple of dollars on a piece that sells on quality.

The bottom line

Match the material to the project's life. Selling door hangers and porch signs? Start with our 18-inch birch rounds — CNC-cut, sanded both sides, craft-ready out of the box.
