The Complete Guide to 18-Inch Wood Rounds for Door Hangers

If you make door hangers for a living — or want to start — the 18-inch round is your bread and butter. It's the size customers expect on a front door, the size that reads from the street, and the size we cut more than any other here in our Statesboro, Georgia shop. Here's everything we've learned from cutting thousands of them.

Why 18 inches?

An 18-inch circle fills the visual center of a standard 36-inch front door without crowding the trim. Go smaller and the design gets lost; go bigger and it fights the door. It's also an efficient cut — we get ten 18-inch rounds out of a single sheet of birch plywood, which is why the 10-pack is our most popular bundle.

1/4-inch vs. 1/2-inch thickness

1/4-inch is the door hanger standard: light enough to hang from a wreath hanger or ribbon without pulling, stiff enough to stay flat. If your customer is hanging it on a door that closes, this is the one. 1/2-inch is for statement pieces — porch leaners, easel signs, and anything that gets handled a lot. It feels premium, takes deeper engraving, and won't flex when a screen door slams.

The finish matters more than you think

A door hanger lives at eye level, in daylight, inches from your customer's guests. Burn marks from a laser-heavy supplier or fuzzy router edges show through paint. Our rounds come CNC-cut with clean edges and sanded smooth on both faces — you should be able to base-coat straight out of the box. If you're currently sanding blanks before you paint, you're paying for that time twice.

Paint prep in three steps

1) Wipe the face with a dry cloth — no wet washing, plywood hates standing water. 2) One coat of quality primer or two coats of your base color, whichever your paint system prefers. 3) Seal outdoor pieces with a UV-resistant clear coat, especially the edges, which drink moisture first.

Most makers we supply sell finished 18-inch door hangers between $45 and $85 depending on detail work. At our bulk pricing, your blank cost runs $4.50–$7 per round — under 10% of your sale price, which is where it should be. The rest is your artistry, and that's the part customers pay for.
