15 Inch Wood Rounds: The Do-Everything Blank Your Craft Booth Is Missing
Ask most door hanger makers what they order and they'll say 18-inch rounds. Fair enough — the 18 is our best seller, and it earns it. But if you've never worked with 15 inch wood rounds, you're leaving money on the table. Around our shop in Statesboro, the 15 is the quiet workhorse: it fits more doors, ships lighter, costs less per piece, and opens up price points the 18 can't touch. Here's the case for adding it to your lineup.
Why 15 Inches Hits the Sweet Spot
An 18-inch round makes a statement on a full-size front door. But plenty of your customers don't have a full-size front door to decorate. Storm doors, apartment doors, dorm rooms, office doors, classroom doors, camper doors — a 15-inch round fits all of them without swallowing the space. It also sits nicely on interior walls, above mantels, and in gallery groupings where an 18 would crowd everything around it.
There's a practical side for you as the maker, too. Fifteens take up less room in your work area, fit more easily on hobby-class laser beds, and cost less to ship when you're mailing finished pieces to customers. Same smooth birch, sanded both sides, no burn marks, stays flat — just a size that solves different problems.
What Crafters Are Making With Them
The obvious one is door hangers, and the 15 makes a great everyday-price door hanger. But we see our customers use them for a lot more: welcome signs for tiered porch displays (a 15 stacked in front of an 18 is a classic look), centerpieces for farmhouse tables, monogram rounds for nurseries, seasonal wreath centers, and paint-party blanks. If you host paint parties, the 15 is arguably the perfect canvas — big enough to feel substantial, small enough that a first-timer can finish one in a session.
Pick Your Thickness
We cut 15-inch rounds in both of our standard thicknesses. Quarter-inch is the door hanger standard — light enough for any wreath hanger or ribbon, easy on shipping costs, and the go-to for most painted designs. Grab the 8-pack of 15" rounds in 1/4" to try them out, or step up to the 12-pack of 15" rounds when they earn a permanent spot in your booth.
Half-inch is the premium feel — more heft, a thicker edge line, and enough body to stand on a shelf or mantel without support. If your customers are asking for pieces that live indoors year-round, the 15" rounds in 1/2" thick are worth the upgrade, and they take laser engraving beautifully.
The Craft Fair Math
Here's where the 15 really earns its keep. Because the blank costs you less than an 18, you can offer a finished 15-inch piece at a friendlier price point — and suddenly you've got a good-better lineup at your table instead of one take-it-or-leave-it price. Shoppers who balk at a big-round price will happily take home the 15. Same paint, same design, one more sale you weren't making before. With fall craft fair season roughly eight weeks out, now is the time to test that second price point.
